Terra Incognita is a vacation house located on a cliff in Mykonos Island.
The site itself, is a small, 250 m2 plot area placed on a steep and rocky slope. It is a narrow strip along the road, overlooking the Aegean Sea. Due to the steepness of the plot area, the house is unravelled in one level that is accessed from the upper road level.
Our aim was to create an autonomous one bedroom house with a guesthouse, which both share the same courtyard and majestic views towards the sea.
The design responds to the altitude of the plot as well as its tendency to dominate the horizon. This house was designed as a piece of landscape rather than a building. The house embraces the landscape and the view as it lies in between the plot topography’s lines retaining in that way the natural beauty and heritage of its location.
Terra Incognita respects the local architecture by generating a whitewashed horizontal unity the walls of which change direction allowing the light to create idyllic light conditions. The brick structure is insulated from the outside and then is covered in white and smooth stucco. The house’s green roof is covered in indigenous plants which makes the house being totally harmonized with nature and blended into the island’s surroundings. The wide glass openings allow the sun and the cool sea breeze to provide to its users a unique experience of the island and after all a holiday house to relax and enjoy.
