The intent is to design a modern, future
orientated and sustainable airport hub for Rīga and Latvia. Following
key terms, strongly interrelated to each other, have been the main
aspects to the concept and formalisation of the design:Transparency – Functionality – Orientation – Security – Identity – Sustainability
To obtain a building that
conveys the concept of transparency it is not enough to design a glass
box. The perception of transparency and what goes along with this
perception are very important derivates that must influence the design.
Transparency with functionality requires continuity: A continuous roof
containing all the building’s functions and the passenger’s needs under
its sheltering gesture provides this. A clear orientation through a
distinct roof design and efficiently planned floor plates are the
result.The continuous roof
structure as predominant architectural form, derived by a recurring
traditional Latvian pattern as the rhomb rooted in the collective
memory, identifies the terminal. It becomes a place that is not only
literally transparent through the extensive use of glass but through the
overall perception of transparency and lightness. It’s welcoming gesture
floats above the landside at the departure level through the check-in
area to the gate areas on the airside. The continuing structure reaches
down to the arrival level and the parking level escorting passengers
towards the terminal and to Rīga. Transparency becomes also a tool to
improve the perception of security inside of the airport building.
Everything is visible and open, narrow spaces are avoided: Visibility to
all directions is enhanced.The
roof gesture together with the organisation of the floor plans allows
an easier connectivity and orientation as passengers are guides easily
through the building and are able to look from almost every spot
outside to the airside, as well as, to the landside.
