Terang Boelan Rooftop Cinema is part of our efforts to create inclusive cultural venues in Jakarta.
The project will occupy the unused roof top of a centrally located car park and turn it into a cultural venue. It will consist of a stepped seating area, which can be used for cinema, talks, musical performances, a bar/cafe for gatherings, a ‘sculpture garden’ showcasing the works of local and international artists.
The central element of the scheme, the stepped cinema seating is envisioned as a simple, compact object on top of the car park building. It rises from the upper level of the split level rooftop and projects out over the lower level. By orienting the structure this way, we take advantage of the level difference between the lower and upper levels and create a sheltered space with generous headheight underneath the seating area. This space will be occupied by the ticket / cafe counter along with tables and benches for the visitors and will offer a unique view over the treetops of the park in front.
Besides providing a sheltered space underneath, lifting up the cinema seating also makes the structure highly visible from the park underneath. It becomes almost like a bill- board that attracts attention to the happenings up on top.
