This Mid 20th Century Modern synagogue was designed by Samuel Z. Moskowitz, FAIA, in 1958, with construction completed in 1960. Interior renovation were designed by Bohlin & Powell Architects in 1973 after the Hurricane Agnus Flood of 1972.
After 60+ years, exterior restoration of the limestone & brick facade was required.
- Travertine for "Dutch Men" was salvaged from another Moskowitz building from the late 1950's. All travertine was labeled, carefully removed & stored during construction. The CMU backup wall was repaired, all galvanized attachments replaced with stainless steel. Two expansion joints were created.
- An aluminum coping atop the travertine facade, designed, but not realized in construction, was recreated.
- New Roman sized brick was ordered from Glen Gery as replacements for damaged brick. Expansion joints, not installed in 1960 were carefully installed.
- Two replacement glass blocks were discovered stored in the basement.
