A landmark that harmonizes with its surroundings, this consolidated office hub for Teck’s mining operations in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, embodies social responsibility, resilience, and environmental stewardship. Nestled in Sparwood, it captures the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains and serves as a vibrant community focal point.
Strategically positioned in the forested mountains of Middletown Crossing, on the traditional lands of the Ktunaxa and Kinbasket peoples, the building bridges two distinct landscapes: a dynamic urban environment and serene old-growth pathways. Designed to meet Zero Carbon Building, BC Energy Step Code Two, and CleanBC standards, this zero-carbon workplace integrates sustainable features such as energy-efficient lighting, EV charging stations, and water-efficient fixtures to minimize its environmental footprint.
The architecture, featuring wood, concrete, and metal, seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, creating a 121,500-square-foot space over three stories. Outside, meadowed landscaping with native plants, a boulder entry plaza, and an expansive agora with a cafeteria courtyard and amphitheatre foster community interaction. Inside, common areas are bathed in natural light and adorned with materials that reflect the exterior’s natural textures, fostering a sense of connection to the environment. This office space prioritizes the health, comfort, and well-being of Teck’s staff, encouraging activity, collaboration, and innovation.
