“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts,”
William Shakespeare
City life and events could be argued to be the raison d’etre for both architecture and theater.
Architecture is more than a mere stage set for life; it plays an active role in the cultural arena and affects the dynamics of a city. Our project is a rethinking of theater as an architectural type and public space as stage for cultural experiences. We place a theater-like object in a public plaza to observe unexpected cultural occurrences, in order to examine how it affects the life of the plaza. Although material composition and final form of our installation is less site-specific and more archetypal, the scale and its rhythms are direct result of this specific urban context. Scaffold is an ethereal structure that supports this urban improvisational theater. Light sets the mood, temperature and visibility for the piece, while sound and color support the atmosphere and engage the audience/performer through curiosity. The fabric weaving through the scaffold is an allusion to the cultural fabric and social interaction in urban environment. The fabric becomes a visual and acoustic foil for this cultural theater. The audience/actor/performer remains at the center of our project.
This interactive “Theater of the world” is a mirror for cultural reflection. In this theater, there are no actors or performance artists. All happens naturally and the events are improvised by the public. The theater is then a mirror reflecting the culture as it unfolds.
In the digital age, architecture could also take the form of facsimiles that could be assembled and reassembled in different places with minimal effort and cost. To reduce the cost of deployment and transport we designed the main structure to be of universal scaffolding system which is readily available internationally.
