Tateshina Highland Villa – A retreat with panoramic views of Mt. Yatsugatake through expansive openings
Situated at the highest point of the Tateshina Highland resort area, this renovated villa offers panoramic views of Mt. Yatsugatake through a large, uninterrupted opening.
The design centers on the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, using red cedar flooring that extends seamlessly from inside to the deck. To preserve the view, the edge of the deck was subtly lowered. Original structural walls were removed, and a lightweight steel beam was introduced to open the facade toward the landscape.
Inside, the space flows as one continuous volume with subtle level differences that create distinct zones while maintaining visual unity. The south-facing deck area includes an open-air bluestone spa and a relocated service courtyard, bringing water, stone, and air into dialogue with the architecture.
From a vantage point approximately 7 meters back, the view of Mt. Yatsugatake unfolds dramatically. The house is a quiet yet powerful statement about framing nature and designing for slow, reflective living in harmony with its mountainous surroundings.
