When Tata Limited discovered that certain aspects of its IT infrastructure upgrade had not been allowed for in the refurbishment project planned for its London offices, it knew that it didn’t have the in-house skills needed to handle a project of this scope and complexity. As the company’s Facilities Manager had previously worked with Mark Dansie, Inflectiontech was appointed initially to project manage the BT OpenReach audit and shift of copper and fibre circuits, which allowed the new lift construction and the refit project to commence.
Inflectiontech also produced a Structured Cabling specification and took over the management of the relationship with “calfordseaden”, the multi-disciplined construction and property consultants providing the architectural and M&E design services, and coordinating the construction element of the building refurbishment.
Tata Ltd Purchase Manager, Kamal Desai, said: “As the project progressed we realised that there were lots of other areas we needed help with, particularly in the engagement and management of third parties to ensure we ended up with what we needed to in our new building.” So the level of Inflectiontech’s involvement in the project was expanded further to assist Tata with the transformation of their technology infrastructure. The company needed innovative solutions that would enable them to continue procuring goods and services for all of the Tata Group companies in the UK into the early 21st Century and beyond.
Inflectiontech’s consultancy and project management services delivered:
Information Technology System – advice on specialist contractor appointment, the installation of a new ITS including Panduit Category 6 UTP structured cabling, new floor distributor enclosures on each floor and a space-optimised equipment/telecommunication room.
Telephony – upgraded from traditional digital PABX to VoIP and fully integrated into a common IP network. The use of a common structured system has delivered significant OPEX cost savings as Tata can now distribute voice extensions and BT Openreach circuits anywhere in the building themselves.
Wi-Fi network – upgraded for BYOD guest and coverage extended for anytime, anywhere roaming for staff onto the corporate LAN on each floor of the building, with added security through the use of separate VLANs
AV and video conferencing – brought in Pacific Wave to upgrade from a single room only system to a state-of-the-art Polycom HD VC IP-based solution controlled via iPads, which can easily transform the meeting space from large single conference room to two single rooms at the touch of a few simple buttons.
IP switched network – brought in Selection Services to upgrade to a Cisco solution that is configured with multiple VLANs for voice, video and data, both wired and wireless, for optimum performance and improved manageability, and combined it with multiple redundant links for increased resilience.
Door access control – worked with Tata’s third party security vendor, ADT, to alter their initial design of an upgraded main door entry system. Instead of using desk handsets with video monitors that used costly proprietary cabling, a system that was used operates over the common structured cabling system was used to provide maximum ROI and flexibility for handset deployment.
Energy efficiency consultancy – completed feasibility studies to establish whether free-cooling could be used to maintain the optimum environmental conditions in the new equipment/telecommunications room and if a Cisco “energywise” network could help Tata achieve its CSR objectives. Arranged for a complete building energy efficiency audit to be carried out to identify where cost savings could be made once the building was fully operational again.
Health and safety consultancy – assisted Tata to comply with necessary fire risk assessment regulations and project managed the auditing of fire stopping and smoke sealing solutions throughout the building.
Kamal said: ““Mark took the time and effort to completely understand our needs and really looked after our interests with third party suppliers.”
The solutions that Inflectiontech has recommended and managed the implementation of mean that Tata’s ICT infrastructure is easily able to cope with the introduction of new technologies and now has the flexibility the company needs for future growth. The plans that were in place before Mark’s involvement would have been ‘good for today’ but the solutions that Tata has ended up with ‘provide more longevity’ with the correct level of performance at the lowest possible cost.
Kamal concluded: “First and foremost for Mark is getting the best result for the customer – I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.”
