Located in Qingpu, Taoyuan, this project aims to redefine the public value of contemporary libraries at the intersection of digital technology and humanistic thinking. The design traces back to Qingpu’s historical role as a vital agricultural granary, translating the textures of "pond culture" and irrigation systems into a spatial vocabulary. Amidst the rise of AI, it constructs a smart sanctuary that bridges ancestral memory with future lifestyles.
To address the site’s original seven-meter-high ceiling, the design adopts a vertical layering strategy. At 3.5 meters above the ground, lightweight "suspended greenhouse mesh" volumes are introduced to reshape the visual horizon and mitigate the sense of vastness, grounding the environment within an intimate human scale. This installation serves not only as a soft boundary for spatial zoning but also as an interface for future digital art projections, responding to the library’s identity as a hub for smart technology.
The spatial layout draws from the organic contours of irrigation ponds, eschewing the conventional mindset of high-density shelving to return the heart of the space to the "people." Flowing, curved bookshelves soften the rigid order, guiding readers to naturally slow their pace while wandering. The material palette utilizes gray-white tones and metallic textures to align with the technological theme, while injecting the warmth of the land through the agricultural language of the greenhouse mesh. Regarding the original steel columns, T-shaped volumes are used to encase and integrate equipment pipelines, achieving a high degree of harmony between functionality and aesthetics.
Meticulous attention is paid to diverse user groups, such as the active and quiet zoning of the children’s reading area, ensuring the coexistence of parent-child interaction and deep reading. Ultimately, the design shifts the focus from "book collection" to "reader needs," using space as a medium to allow reading to take root within the evolution of technology and the preservation of local memory.
