Tao Bun Raya is a collaborative project between architects and the coffee shop owner, developed in partnership with traditional stilt-house craftsmen and local waste material suppliers. The goal was to reimagine the traditional stilt house as a sustainable and socially engaging space that meets the needs of modern urban life. Designed as both a coffee shop and community hub, it offers a welcoming space for youth to gather, socialize, and host local events.
Located in a flood-prone area of Makassar, the building uses a stilt-house structure that allows 90% of the ground to remain open and absorptive, reducing flood impact and preserving natural water flow. The open space beneath the building also functions as a venue for community activities.
The project emphasizes sustainability through the use of upcycled timber for the main structure and reused wood boards for the walls. Bamboo fencing, hand-sewn by local artisans using salvaged materials, adds to its eco-conscious approach. Tao Bun Raya serves as a living example of how traditional architecture can evolve with creativity and purpose. It highlights how strong collaboration between designers, local businesses, and material reuse can create spaces that are environmentally responsible, culturally rooted, and socially impactful.
The project approached the challenge of building sustainably in a flood-prone urban area by reimagining the traditional stilt house through a modern, community-focused lens. Instead of relying on conventional construction materials, the team worked with local waste material suppliers to source upcycled timber and reclaimed wood, significantly reducing environmental impact and construction costs.
The design preserves 90% ground permeability by lifting the structure on stilts, allowing water absorption and creating a functional open space below. This area doubles as a flexible venue for community events, activating space that is often overlooked.
his project has redefined how society views traditional stilt houses, proving they remain relevant through creative adaptation. By using reclaimed wood and local materials, it promotes sustainable daily living such as reducing waste, enhancing flood resilience, and supporting local craftsmanship. Tao Bun Raya inspires a shift toward valuing existing resources and traditional knowledge in modern design. Beyond the building itself, it encourages communities and designers to embrace cultural heritage as a foundation for innovative, eco-friendly solutions. This approach not only supports sustainability but also strengthens social connections, showing that tradition and modern life can coexist harmoniously.
