The promoters command the design a funeral home in the limits of the industrial estate land of Villadangos del Páramo (León). The environment of industrial buildings will influence along with the functional program itself, the unique character of this type of space in the final creation of the building.
The origin of the project is in the same point of access to the enclosure: the idea of promenade that, in successive stages or filters, strips the user of the mundane daily hustle and immerses the visitant into a different condition, according to the experience in the interior.
To arrive to the room where the deceased is placed to be able to give the last farewell, the visitor crosses a series of thresholds that gradually give way to more contained spaces: from the outside to the open courtyard to a double height lobby and finally, the viewing room for the wake. The translation of this idea is achieved with the control of the heights, views and lighting of each of the rooms and the intermediate steps. The look of the access patio is horizontal and long, anticipating the sensations of the body that is about to enter the heart of the building; in the lobby, this look is shortened and the light begins to surround the user, without directing him. Finally, the wake rooms, with their hollows at a lower height, invite a closer look.
- General overview of the building
A building of simple geometry is proposed according to the programmatic and functional characteristics of a funeral home. The entire program is located on a single floor at the access level. Trying to provide natural light and ventilation to all areas of waiting and distributors. Taking into account the orientation of the four facades, window apertures of varying proportions with sun protection systems depending on their location and correspond room in the building.
- Building Program
The general concept design of the complex stems from the fact that the spaces resulting from the architectural conceptualization result in open spaces with proper light endowment and good environmental conditions.
The program requirements is organized in a single plant at level 0.00. The main access resides in the southern part of the plot, through a portico-space and a semi-covered patio. From that entrance, which functions as windbreak you access the office and exhibition of funeral urns on the one hand and the main lobby on the other. The double-height lobby space connects the 3 wake rooms and the toilets’ space
In the northern part of the building is where the entire private area of services, funeral facilities, etc. are located. It is organized around a central distributor in which the crematorium is located. Around this space are located the burial mounds, the thanatopraxy room, personnel changing rooms, other facilities and warehouse.
- Construction
Building structure is made of metal porticos on foundations of reinforced concrete footings. In the interiors, wood, natural stone and paint have been used on pavements as well as partitions of laminated plaster. For the exterior, we have opted for a reduced palette of materials with a strong identity: the granite used in the pavement extends over certain elements of the building, as if it were a carved orography; a COR-TEN steel skin shapes the silhouette of the funeral home by means of folds and cutouts to accommodate more public spaces. While at the same time sustains the volume of prefabricated white concrete panels that the rest of the program embeds.
