Downtown Tampa is seeing a surge of new development, especially along the Hillsborough River with the Riverwalk project. This has sparked a fire to rejuvenate many of the established residential buildings along the Riverwalk as it becomes more pedestrian friendly. Design Styles Architecture was asked to help the residents of one of the oldest condominium towers in the downtown area envision a new look for their building. The residents wanted three main components; a better sense of arrival, a better sense of security, and to utilize the large wall spaces as an art canvas for the city. Presented as a phased project, the design would accent the vertical nature of the building through paint colors and vertical art pieces. To create a clear sense of arrival, a new entry element would be constructed, which could also function as a security gate. In addition to the main criteria, DSA created a large shared space on the roof of the parking garage, visible only from the tower itself and briefly from the elevated interstate to the north. This space would function as a hidden oasis for the residents only with private cabanas, grilling stations, and lounge furniture. It would truly be a unique experience in the city.
