“Architecture is moving towards a new kind of complexity; a synthesis of community, environment, technology, program, and the dreaded word; economics.” - Eric HowlerOne Mango Tree was founded by KSA graduate Halle Butvin and argues that economic empowerment provides the foundation for sustainable development. This organization entails a fair trade model to generate opportunities for people in impoverished and conflict ridden areas. The studio objective was to explore the concept of architecture diverging from the “starchitect” stance and beginning to address new issues such as the economy. Our goal is to aid One Mango Tree through the design of a facility to house the production and distribution of its products. Therefore our design concept was meant to be an iconic building that respects their culture as well as inspires empowerment.
