THE TAIWAN TOWER OF EIGHT ELEMENTS is a new sightseeing platform and vertical park that reveals the fluid interconnection of the natural processes and draws visitor's attention to their beauty and complexity. Designed to commemorate the unification of Taichung City and Taichung County it aims to inspire greener urban behavior. The delicate surface of the tower is its main visual and conceptual feature. Crated by the world renowned artist Ned Kahn, it responds to the slightest motion of air and sun. Waves gently ripple on tower's skin creating an ever changing play of reflections, transparencies and shadows. This perpetual play illustrates in a subtle way the power, perfection and fragility of nature. Instead of accentuating on the engineering manifestation of sustainability through generation of wind energy, the concept places emphasis on the delicacy of nature and calls on human responsibility for preserving its frangible equilibrium. The octagonal plan of the tower relates to the Feng-shui Bagua tradition and emphasizes the inherent origins of sustainability and harmony in Chinese culture. The eight sides of the base and the eight sky gardens represent the traditional understanding of the eight natural elements.They bear both popular and enigmatic multi-layered symbolic and cultural meanings that blend with tower's contemporary significance. The slender silhouette of the tower follows the shape of rising air currents and amplifies the effect of its fluid surface. It depicts the vigorous spirit of Taiwan and spreads symbolic positive energy over the city. Created from fusion of contemporary art, ancient tradition and advanced engineering the TAIWAN TOWER OF EIGHT ELEMENTS celebrates human symbiosis with nature and becomes Taiching's main attraction, favorite destination and distinct symbol.
