The environment at the TAIKI 1333 Iwata-minami built in Iwata City in Shizuoka Prefecture is comprised largely by surrounding fields, with the building looking out onto roads used in the daily lives of local residents; it’s somewhat of a partially residential area. I think that large pachinko halls and parking buildings constitute buildings completely contrasting with the present scenery found in this kind of environment. In a recent era where public architecture can become town landmarks in any municipality, I think that large shopping malls and amusement centers also present the potential of serving a similar significance.
Structures of certain scales which surpass our own human scales become things removed from our living environments and living spaces. This building’s design encompasses an essence that is at least a little removed from that type of architecture.
I think the consistency of form and color within the large structure invites an image which projects monotony and weight. The building concept is characterized by a plan pushed forward on the foundation of a design characterized by “multi-layered renderings.” Lines and surfaces, along with the overlapping of lights, colors, materials and spaces, become another sort of expression which makes for a design that encompasses repetitions in terms of both conformity and non-conformity. I think that a crucial key in a space characterized by “multi-layered renderings” is the movement of people and the noise of machinery.
