YEAR
2013
SIZE
25,000 sqft - 100,000 sqft
B. Braun Melsungen AG proposed a competition for an extension to the Haydau Cloister, dating from the 12th century, with a hotel new build. The concept implicates the development of this historical location into an overall modern conference and seminar center. The design, which was awarded the first prize, is an unmistakable response to the existing urban context, in which the new build will reconstruct the original unity of the complex.
The elongated structure seems to hover above the remains of the historic walls, which continues up to form the hotel with its perforations functioning as windows. The hotel provides 130 rooms on two levels, while 14 suites are accommodated in the recessed floor, characterized by its subtle glass architecture. The ground floor is reserved for public areas such as reception, restaurant, bar, lounge, and spa. The historic wall, which has been integrated into the new build, separates the spa area from the lobby.
The concept suggested integrating the sandstone blocks from the buildings that were demolished into the new façade. The positioning of the elongated hotel building creates a new church forecourt, which addresses and integrates the Morschen town context. The baroque garden with a 5 foot level difference, continues into the hotel lobby to achieve a strong connection with the exterior.
