Our Tale of Vision on innovation & sustainability
Instead of taking a new place in our suppressed
natural landscape, there is nothing more sustainable
than bringing an old house back into use and
optimising it for the future. Through a thorough
approach, we convert old energy-guzzling homes
into efficient future-proof homes. Sustainability is
not limited to materials, calculations and figures...it
is contained in your basic concept. As a designer,
builder, you have to be accountable to the future
residents. We not only build for our builder, but we
also work with future scenario A, B, C...that's where
sustainability is at its core.
Couple Transforms '80s house into a modern villa
Dworp, Belgium - september 2023
In a heartwarming story of architectural ingenuity and a deep love for their neighborhood, an elderly couple recently embarked on a remarkable renovation journey that has captivated the local community. Located just a stone's throw from their previous residence, they purchased an '80s villa from their former neighbor, attracted by its superior location.
Upon acquiring the property, they sought the expertise of CASTORFIBER architects to explore the possibilities it held. Their dream was to create additional rooms beneath the roof, a vision that required the installation of dormer windows. While this idea failed to resonate with many, a bold alternative soon emerged.
Arch. Maarten Dekoninck, owner castorfiber architecturestudio: ” the 1980s villa was completely dated in terms of technology and use of space. the corridor was so big that you could easily have a party in it for 30 people, a waste of space."
Love at First Sight: A Single Draft Transforms Their Dream
Just one preliminary design, captured their hearts. The resulting renovation plan seamlessly integrated modernity with the villa's original charm while adding valuable living space beneath the roof.
Materials, Techniques, and Sustainability
The transformation of this '80s villa was not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally conscious. The couple and their dedicated team of architects and builders selected materials and techniques with a focus on sustainability.
Materials used included weathered ash, decorative plaster with attika profiles, alucobond, and glass balustrades, creating a harmonious blend of contemporary design and historical context. The inclusion of advanced technologies such as a air-water heat pump, PV cells, a battery system, C+ ventilation, and underfloor heating showcases their commitment to an eco-friendly lifestyle.
The standout feature of this renovation project is the utilization of a timber frame construction for the rooftop addition, demonstrating technical prowess and a dedication to preserving the villa's original structure. The timber frame builder is based in the Belgian Ardennes and mainly uses Belgian timber for its production
The garden, designed by BuroBuiten, adds to the overall appeal of the property, creating a serene environment.
This remarkable renovation project has not only fulfilled the dreams of the client but has also become a symbol of inspiration for the renovation industry. With an EPB A label, it sets a new standard for energy efficiency in a neighborhood full of 1980s villas.
