The T Vacation House is located in Don Salvador Benedicto, a municipality in Negros Occidental at an elevation of 2,500 feet. The house is sited on the highest point of the property, surrounded by farmland and to maximize the 360 views of the mountain range and Mt. Kanlaon, the most active volcano in the Philippines. We designed a contemporary farm house for the client’s family that addressed their desire for a residence inspired by vernacular Filipino architecture. They also requested that the house be as open to the elements as possible so that they could fully enjoy the views and the cool mountain climate. Using traditional cogon grass roofing on a gable roof, the pitch of the roofs are angled to face the west and east sun, opening up to the north and south for optimized shading and natural day lighting. The two roofs house separate programs, one for the two bedrooms and the other for the living and dining rooms. They were strategically offset to allow for the prevailing winds that come from the northeast and southwest to circulate freely though the house. The traditional stilt construction is also referenced by elevating the spaces with the sculptural angled columns. Local materials are also used throughout: a local stone for the flooring, natural matting for the ceilings and soffits, and local woods for the doors, windows, and screens.
