We felt this small addition fit the concept of an accessory to the house. The existing ranch dwelling is also small in scale, located west of the city. The program called for a 3-season room adjacent the kitchen. It would serve as an eating area &/or fulcrum between the house & back yard. It has a minimal footprint, comprising 135 square feet. Open & easy access points were desired at the kitchen & exterior. Light electrical was necessary for outlets & sconces, but an overriding goal was to incorporate maximum natural light. The addition faces due South, so this facade was fabricated w/ a humble canopy & 3 large glass panels, which angle away from the harsh summer sun.(the plan & elevation angle, also directly emulate the pitch of the existing roof). Spring, fall, & winter sunlight pour into the space for passive heating. Another devise for collecting light can be seen in the translucent polycarbonate roof. A simple repeating joist layout spills gradiated light downward. French & double sliding doors allow the space to breath; circulating air & guests. Finally, the room floats lightly over a recessed foundation.
