Nowadays, the prestigious Courthouse of Brussels gives us an image of a grand building devoted almost exclusively to pleading and to other judicial functions. On the other hand, the morphology of the Courthouse doesn't meet the needs of the daily work of the judicial community actors anymore.
However, the symbolic function of the building is such that it wouldn't be without risks to divert it from its original judicial purpose.
A constantly evolving national and international justice, fitting into the citizen reality and wishing to give itself the capacity of self-criticism, deserves an organ of reflection, research and construction for the justice of Tomorrow. Therefore, the Courthouse embodies the Research Laboratory of Law as such. It establishes itself as the real heart of a new urban and judicial plan. It becomes the reflection center of a new judicial pole and personalizes a new justice, making it more human and accessible to the citizens.
This public area litteraly becomes an Agora or a Forum: a place where people gather, in order to exchange ideas, opinions and to recreate social networks. The covered market becomes this place and participates in the everyday life of each individual as well as in the federation of new ideas. It recreates the original link between the areas of « Louise Avenue » and « Marolles ».
The main axis « Louise-Marolles », spinal column of the new courthouse buildings, running through the existing Poelaert Square, links, distributes, and activates the judicial pole and its surroundings. It gives rise to the two essential spaces of the intervention: the new Courthouse waiting hall and the new covered market.
The old Courthouse, the Louise avenue, the « Marolles », the city ring, the new Courthouse waiting hall, the new covered market, the public transports,… The intervention seeks to link, unify and connect the entire extra alveolar spaces of the present day Brussels courthouse. The area becomes the key point of the action of the « Man of Justice » but above all, of the Citizen. It evolves, symbolically and concretely, into the Synapses linking Man to Justice, to the City, and to the State… Synapse.
