This project is a major renovation of an older 2-level apartment with incredible views of
iconic the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge for an art collector with a passion
for fashion and colour. Rooms were combined to open to the view. Openings were
maximised for the ever-changing views through. The interiors of this exquisitely re-
imagined residence are a juxtaposition of the sincere and the playful. They do not rely on
the iconic views for their impact, rather, they are considered as one plane of artwork in
conversation.
The design is a personal journey for the client, one that reaches across to France to
reference her love of Paris and Hotel Costes. Calacutta Vagli marble and chevron-style
parquetry were chosen for luxurious and classic materiality and furniture was chosen for
their playfulness. Leading Australian artists are represented, and Lindy Lee’s “Listening
to the Moon” sculpture was designed as an integral part of the design. This piece, hung
over the newly formed stairwell, is set so that it creates ripples in the ceiling it descends
from and across the backdrop wall, referencing the curved planes of the interior of the
Opera House it faces.
The main bedroom forms part of the two-level apartment renovation. The space was
previously worn and dark and had no connection to the grand Sydney Harbour view. The
project involved creating a new connection to the ensuite through a walk-in robe behind
a panelled door. Every surface of the room has been renovated, including installing a
decorative panelled bedhead wall that provides a wild sense of joy to this room. All
features in the bedroom revolve around this glorious, embroidered fabric, with bed linen
chosen to bring out the copper golden and deep pink hues.
