The switching station is owned by SEV, the main Faroese energy supplier. Its function is to transfer the power from a wind farm to an electricity grid. In addition to the station's technical role, it also includes a teaching room, rooms for maintenance and storage space. The total width is 2000 m2.
The challenge is to create a facility that harmonizes with a bare landscape. Furthermore, it must be an architectural contribution.
The equipment is important for delivery security, and it is expensive. It is therefore well guarded from climate and other potential damage. Furthermore, passers-by are protected from the dangerous equipment.
The appearance is based in the open field, and clearly defines the lines between nature and technology. The shape is distinctive and encapsulates the station and ensures the area looks inviting. The traditional colors used by the owner (red, yellow, and green) can be seen both day and night. In terms of shape and color, the switching station is courting the area.
The switching station is developed by Árni Winter Arkitektar who merged with SNA in 2017.
