The brief given to us when approaching the land was that the investor – someone returning from Switzerland – desired a solid, sustainable home, a place that could be called an oasis in the sunny and windy coastal city of Da Nang.
The style we aimed for is modern and minimalist, but still maintains the necessary luxury. The house’s shape is inspired by the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland. The dominant color is white, from the exterior stone paint, the fence and gate, to the interior stone cladding, limiting heat absorption from dark materials. These elements surround the rough structure of the house to minimize heat absorption from sunlight. The choice of faux stone paint for the exterior was also carefully considered, ensuring that the white color is easy to clean after rain, while the "lotus leaf" texture on the surface helps resist dirt accumulation.
On a modest plot of land, to ensure the functional needs of the house, the functional spaces are stacked on top of each other. Therefore, careful planning to cope with the harsh sunlight and summer heat was essential.
The owner enjoys natural light and plants, relishing the energy that natural light brings. As a result, we decided to create an open space by placing sliding glass doors hidden behind louvered screens and a system of greenery. The cool sea breeze circulates through all the spaces. The green-covered exterior also contributes to creating a microclimate for the house, bringing numerous benefits for the people living in it. This design helps balance humidity in the house, minimizing the dampness typical of coastal regions.
For open spaces, privacy is also carefully considered. The glass doors and multi-layered glass walls reduce noise, but more importantly, the vertical louvers, movable metal screens, and greenery all contribute to enhancing privacy, limiting street noise from entering the living spaces.
Throughout the interior, the materials used are stone and wood, all meticulously crafted by local artisans, with sharp attention to detail.
The living and kitchen area is on the ground floor, surrounded by a fence and tropical plants, ensuring a certain level of privacy while still receiving natural light. The living room and kitchen are designed to flow seamlessly, allowing the cool sea breeze to circulate and carry away the heat from the kitchen, maintaining a pleasant temperature. The placement of a fish pond in the west helps add moisture when the dry, hot Foehn winds blow, reducing the heat from these winds.
Handcrafted stone cladding runs throughout the spaces, but for the soundproof room, we prioritized wood materials to ensure the room’s acoustics.
The study, which is also the owner's reading and research space, is open with greenery and natural wind to help the owner feel at ease, while still ensuring privacy and quiet for work.
The functional layout is thoughtfully organized by floor height, further enhancing privacy. The bedrooms are placed on the east-facing facade to reduce the afternoon heat from the western sun. The materials and lighting in the bedrooms are carefully chosen to create a quiet, cozy atmosphere, improving both physical and mental energy during rest.
On the west side is the master bathroom, which, while still an open space, features movable louvered screens to ensure privacy, cleanliness, and dryness.
Though located on a modest plot of land, the house still meets all functional needs. It stands as a green oasis, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the outside world, making the home a place of healing.
