Sweetea´s is a new offering from da.u.de Tea Corporation, known for exotic teas crafted by tea masters. With the Philippines’ first Certified Tea Master Renee Sebastian at its helm, Sweetea’s offers fine quality, custom teas at pocket-friendly price points, with aim of sparking a greater appreciation for tea locally.
With the project we wanted not only to solve the space to fit Sweetea´s but also to create the brand image with a smart and unique design.
The design is inspired in the Ifugao rice terraces, a landscape that Renee sees as a viable geography for planting premium teas in the Philippines. The heart of the project took shape from a photo of the Banaue Rice Terraces sent to me during the early design phase. We wanted to create a design that was connected with Filipino ethnicity, but with a twist, with a new approach, fresh and bold look.
The idea was to create a versatile design, which could be able to generate several configurations of the store. They are selling exotic teas, so we wanted to pass the sassiness of the flavors to the space.
Renee is a person very attuned to her senses. She blends her teas based on taste, scents, color composition, benefits, and even the sound that ingredients make during infusion. All are important for the final product. We wanted to have these key elements, the idea of all of these vibrations in the design so people can feel Renee’s process.
The shop is located in one of the most popular and high foot-traffic premiere malls in Metro Manila, G/F The Block, SM City North EDSA. So we needed a store with adaptability of the space to many scenarios. During peak hours more free space is needed so the bar elements pull out and roll out as additional seating for customers. In the off-peak time, guests enjoy a more relaxed area with the bar modules transforming into counter seating perfect for interacting with tea baristas, some pop up retail space or a table to launch a new product. Another use of the bar module is as a pop-up retail shelf space or a mobile table for featuring retail products. In some key areas there are “Mamushkas”, symbolizing vibrations that bring a pop of color perfect for product showcases. These nesting blocks use the signature colors of the Sweetea’s brand.
There is a play between modules, surfaces, full and empty spaces. Some volumes can be moved and flipped. Moving these modular pieces define new spaces. Flipping them around change the surface to either natural wood, colour, or black board for writing messages. These modular blocks can be used as chairs with back rests, as benches, tables, or shelves.
At the back of the store, the lines go up and down like mountains, like vibrations, framing the seating area with seats and tables that can be used freely. This invites the people to interact with the space in a fun way. The shop change his look, so people are constantly visually stimulated, don’t take the space for granted and feels encouraged to discover a new look just as they are encouraged to try new flavors and scents of teas.
The ceiling features teabags as clouds creating the illusion of the sky. Like real clouds they soften the light in the space to create a calming mood. We used Encaja wooden lamps with colored cables as pendant lamps. They provide stronger illumination over the counters to grab more attention and to provide better task lighting.
This is the first one of the retail shops. In the future several shops and pop up stores will open, with the same design premises.
