This project was planned due to the 10th year transition since the grand opening of this facility. As a matter of fact, when this project started, it was not clear “how far” we were going to contribute to the renewal.
First of all, what we worked on was to grasp the picture of the existing facility. We made countless visits and interviewed our client. From our actual experience, we noticed that the facility was built with complex flow line and internally constructed. After focusing on improving these floor planning designs, “building an extension” came out to be the best solution. Once the concept being decided, we worked toward making wide-open facility and redesigning the whole facility.
We did not try to create a totally new world-view. We looked for necessary ways to make the most of this facility. One was, the chapel. It was originally a circular and ventricular shape. The closer we go to the center of the ceiling, the higher we could make the top. Taking advantage of this structure, we were able to realize the rose design that evokes the name of this facility.
Second of all, for the extended building in the middle, we designed layers of grids setback in a semicircle in front of the external walls. In this way, the whole building will be dressed with warm sunlight, softens the garden boundaries, and feel the atmosphere of this facility. Thus, we evaluated the existing facility first, and then rebuilt the specific functions. Through installing this new identity, we were able to renew the building, not forcing, but into a “very natural way”.
