After 22 years at one location, Sweet Lady Jane, arguably LA’s most beloved cake maker contacted us to design their new bakery, café and retail shop in Santa Monica. We did a full conversion on an existing 1500 sf pharmacy including an all new kitchen.
The objective was to preserve the 22 year tradition of Sweet Lady Jane and yet to breathe some new life into the old world design elements beloved by Jane. Jane’s original store features mullioned windows and creeping vine, which had been expounded in the Sweet Lady Jane logo.
We saw the leaf and vine as the quintessential cake embellishment and chose to introduce it throughout our design. Creeping rosemary, pink lemon trees and strawberries flank an antique domed door with vine handle. Concrete floors are etched and the ceiling is painted with the creeping vine. Bloom lights droop and open from the ceiling in this confectionary garden.
We also chose to locate the cake decorator into the storefront window to encourage activity and interest on Montana Avenue.
