Suurpelto is one of the largest new city developments in the metropolitan area. The area planning is divided into seven phases of which Eriksson Architects Ltd are designing Phases IV, V and VII.
A large part of the former agricultural area acts as an urban central meadow that forms a leisure area and green lungs for the coming urban area. One existing manor house will be preserved and turned into a centre for gardening activities and a place for organic food growers to sell their goods.
Around the central meadow new housing areas form small city villages where each has its own unique character. The buildings are mostly from two to four stories high. In the north there’s a series of apartment buildings up two seven stories high that form a solar panel wall and a sound barrier against highway noise from the north. Smaller green areas are connected to the central meadow and further on to the Central Park of Espoo. Pedestrian streets connect the different phases together. A wide variety of building types and apartment sizes will be offered.
Suurpelto is planned for sustainability. Geothermal and solar energy are the main heating sources. Waste treatment is managed by underground vacuum based pipe lines collected into central treatment plants. Recyclable waste is separated automatically and all possible waste will be treated for reuse . Public traffic will be on rail, either above or underground.
