Our proposal is to replace a large telecommunications tower that dominates the skyline of San Francisco with a new landmark structure. The new tower would locate a restaurant and viewing deck approximately 500 ft above the hill top and above the fog belt, allowing the public to see clear views of the city through out the year. The proposed design is a relatively thin concrete core, wrapped with a double helix mesh of high tensile steel cables that give the tower structural stiffness. This main structure is held off the core by steel struts that create a huge vertical beam. The cables are incased in a light metal cladding, reflecting the sun in facets, giving the impression that the tower is almost crystalline in form. Set back from the main cable structure is a secondary glazing lattice. This is smaller than the primary structure and is more flexible, allowing for wind loads and dynamic forces.
