A submission for the Design for Homes Townhouse Competition 2004. The concept is based on a highly flexible 6.1m x 6.1m plan. The tight winder staircase is positioned centrally with the wet rooms alternating with the balconies /winter gardens either front or rear taking maximum advantage of the sun. The reception rooms at the lower levels have dual aspect and can be linked vertically by means of a conservatory. The houses have highly insulated timber frame construction which allows for a rapid dry envelope and faster construction on site. Floors and roofs span between the party walls allowing for the internal partitions to be repositioned over time. Solar panels are integrated into the roof tiling and the conservatories. The design creates an integrated system that can generate terraced houses, live/work units or even apartments which are extremely adaptable, low energy and largely prefabricated and can be clad with different finishes to suit the location.
