OverviewMy first structure using Autodesk Revit, a sustainable cabin that serves as a weekend retreat residence for 1 or 2 people. It is set on a 50' x 50' site in central Texas. The square footage limit was set to 500sqft.UtilitiesThe building utilizes a rainwater collection and filtration system to provide water for the various hydro-utilities. It also includes a section of land dedicated for agricultural utilization. A propane tank remains a safe distance from the cabin while providing it with fuel for the stove-top and heating system as an alternative to the fireplace. Sustainable Form:The buildings profile was derived from a basic V shape. The open end of the V is due south to collect the wind that emanates from the south during the summer and force it through the house via the windows throughout the house. The space occupying the opening of the V serves as a covered patio that both acts as both a shaded outdoor contemplation area as well as a cooling zone for incoming winds during the summer. During the winter this V shape works in an opposite way by splitting and blocking the cold northern winds. Thus in both the summer and winter the cabins form works to provide thermal comfort for its residents while simultaneously lowering energy costs. Active and Passive SolarThe roof of the cabin was designed using basic trigonometry and knowledge of the proposed locations sun patterns to provide the correct amounts of light into the home throughout the seasons. Through the proper dimensions of the cabins overhangs and window sill placement, sunlight can be completely blocked out during the summer while still filling the home with light during the winter. Solar Panels also cover the roof for energy gathering during the day. This energy is stored and used to power the lights and other electrical fixtures in the home. Interior SpacesThe interior space is governed by a basic separation of the personal and public spaces. Your public spaces (kitchen, living, ect.) remain in the westward portion of the house while the personal spaces (bedroom, bathroom, shower, ect.) remain in the eastward portion of the cabin. A lack of interior walls maximizes the small living space while retractable ceiling storage allows for space efficient storage.
