About: Sushi-teria is a new concept in the restaurant industry where the patron orders using tablet technology. Sushi-teria believes in delivering the “art of sushi”, a combination of technique, care, and detail, even when one is on the go.
Interior: Tech and Reflection: One enters the stark, minimal restaurant space from two opposite sides, from 33rd Street or from inside the Empire State Building. A minimal ceiling with a consistent pattern of slotlights connect the two entries. Instead of using a feature wall behind the chefs, the design implemented a non-feature wall that reflects the lit ceiling slots. To offset the tech aesthetic, the sushi counter is clad in traditional Japanese Shou-sugi-ban wood siding. The term “Shou-Sugi-Ban” (焼杉板) translates to “burnt cedar board” which was devised as a way to make wood less susceptible to fire. Tablets line the walls where patrons order and go, like technology.
