SUNSET HAMMOCK, a monumental environmental public-art project in Sunset Point Park, in Tamarac, Florida raises awareness about the critical role of the Everglades within the ecological balance of South Florida. Conceived as a hammock, slowly elevating in an otherwise flat landscape, it stands out juxtaposing the expansiveness of the Everglades, the adjacent wetland, and the community park with infrastructural and commercial development such as I-75, Amazon, and City Furniture warehouses. The red color finish increasing in color intensity, view, and connectivity to the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.
This concept for a public art sculpture juxtaposes the expansiveness of the Everglades with infrastructure that includes a modular rhythmic red aluminum structure and 20-by-3-foot periscope oriented towards the Everglades. Sunset Hammock integrates the adjacent wetland with a community park and includes an educational children’s art program done in collaboration with Young At Art Museum. This project has been awarded an NEA Our Town Grant and Land and Water Conservation Fund Cultural Facilities Grant.
