Pavilion for celebrating the 100th anniversary of Republic of China (Sun Moon Lake / Yuchih, Nantou)Design & ResponsibilityThe pavilion is designed to shelter an existing platform on the lake, at the marina, which is occasionally used as a stage. Although the pavilion is designed for the 100th anniversary concert, it can be used for various events like concerts, theater performances, or festivals in the long term. The whitely roof is organic in shape and resembles a thin illuminated cloud hovering over the existing platform, held by five fragile columns in different heights that pierce through its surface. It was essential for the design of the stage and roof-structure to preserve the beautiful view onto the lake and the mountainous landscape of the national scenic area, as seen from the embankment and the stairs. Therefore the roof is as light as possible, both visually and structurally. It is covered with translucent high-tech plastic. On the inside, LEDs cover the entire surface to illuminate the roof in different colors – white, red and blue. This does not only serve as stage lighting but makes the luminous “cloud“ a landmark, recognizable from a distance. The intensity of the light is alterable, so that the roof can appear as a pulsating, smoldering or brightly shining object. The energy-saving LED technology can be powered by solar-collectors.Structural Design & Disaster MitigationIn its cross section, the roof has a concave shape and sharp edges. The shape is not only used for aesthetic and constructive reasons but also for its acoustic advantages. A light steel truss structure, not visible from the outside, allows a great span of 35 meters with a maximum thickness of approx. 1.4 meters in the middle, tapering to zero at the edges. This is how the roof appears to the viewer as a very thin structure from most angles. It can be placed in different heights for different occasions – such as concerts, theater, musicals or festivals. As an additional element, para-vents can be used for stage-design to cover the back and the sides of the stage. The roof may be placed in an infinite number of heights ranging from a minimum of one to a maximum of fourteen meters. The possibility to lower the roof through five electric motors, placed at the junctures, makes it easy to clean and install additional light or sound systems underneath. The main idea of lowering it to the platform-level, however, is to prevent damage during strong storms or typhoons. The roof rests on five slim and elastic steel columns in different lengths (between approx. 15 and 25 meters in height), which are deep-grounded on prefabricated isolated footings on the ground of the lake. The connections between roof and columns are limber, so that it is resistant to damages from earthquakes. Furthermore, the roof structure itself contributes to an increased earthquake resistance due to its extremely light weight. There is no constructive connection between the existing platform and the roof construction. In collaboration with Shih (composer / Vienna) and Oliver Englhardt (structural design / &structures, Munich) for National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra
