The Summit Medical Clinic is a one story, 8000SF medical facility, located on a major thoroughfare in Colorado Springs, CO. The exam rooms, office and related support spaces are organized around a central, two story atrium space that is filled with daylight from clerestory windows on all four sides. The main entrance faces the interior of the site and is surrounded by full height glazing that captures views of the adjoining landscaping. The timber framing of the high roof is the signature feature of the entrance and atrium space, and the exposed wood structure creates a warm and inviting feel. At night the lighted structure glows like a lantern and is a striking presence on the street.
The triangular shape of the site generated the distinctive stepped geometry of the South elevation, which provides a strong identity for the building from the street. A limited palette of materials was used to include ground face concrete block, rusting Corten steel panels and green tinted glazing. Where possible, the materials were detailed to abut concrete to steel to glass without intervening framing. The clear anodized aluminum glazing system provides a contrasting sparkle, the "jewelry" for the building.
