Footprint Architects have completed the renovation and extensions of an existing building to form a new college for young people with Aspergers Syndrome. Summerwood College supports and prepares young people in developing independence and the transition into main stream further and higher education, or full time employment. It features two teaching areas and supporting group rooms, a sensory room, a flat where students are able to develop independence and life skills, dining and kitchen facilities and a games room. The concept for the external extensions draws on the gables and black timber frame of the period building. Internally walls are lined with birch faced plywood creating a natural and calming environment for students. Large glass doors are situated in the games room, which allows natural light and a connection with the small outside courtyard.
