The original building was a two levels residual part of a complex, built inside a rock wall in the late 70s within the area of the Monte San Bartolo Regional Park. The original digging was realized to create some concrete structures for the consolidation of the higher levels. The spaces inside had never been used, and the rooms were unhealthy and unsafe. Our goal was to restore the building and create a small vacation house with an amazing view of the surroundings.

We thought to put the living area on the upper floor and leave all the services on the ground floor. Both levels are partially embedded in the rock wall and both overlook the National Park, but we preferred to give the upper floor a really impressive view: the large, sliding sloping windows allow to enjoy the outstanding panorama all the way to the sea.

For the renovation we only used natural materials: wood in the interior – scraped and torn-looking lime plasters – painted iron frames for the windows, antique brass and aged wood for the trims. The light, also, is used like a construction material, carefully placed to emphasize the simplicity of the architectures and to create astonishing effects.

We rebuilt a part of the mountain to design a visual cone through the horizon, establishing an enduring link between the building and the surrounding nature.
