This residence is situated overlooking the intracoastal waterway on a barrier island in Sullivan’s Island, SC. The island’s small coastal homes are quickly disappearing being replaced by large, out of scale structures
competing for space. As a result the island’s zoning regulations have recently been rewritten placing strict setback and height requirements on new construction. The resulting architectural style was loosely termed
“wedding cake” design by the client and was clearly not what he wanted. He challenged the architects to take a very narrow lot and create a unique, inviting home for his outdoor lifestyle.
Despite the challenges that the site presented due to its limited width and strict setback requirements, the orientation of the house successfully maximizes the site’s potential for cross ventilation and scenic vistas. The architect and landscape architect collaborated to create a seamless flow between the house, pool, deck, and flora; all the while guiding visitors towards a hidden entryway. In order to create a home that responds to the owner’s active outdoor lifestyle, the exterior porches—including the pool deck and patio
areas beneath the house—are designed to function as outdoor “rooms.” Details on the house are intentionally simplified to maintain an emphasis on the home’s pristine island surroundings. Interior finishes were selected for their “unfinished” natural look requiring minimal maintenance in the harsh, beach environment.
