The sukkah is a temporary structure erected during the Jewish observance of Sukkot, or the harvest festival. This sukkah’s enclosure is created by a juxtaposition of facades of varying porosity. Straw bales, used for two main walls reinforce the visual stability of the structure, while the surrounding walls and roof are constructed of woven wood materials. Scents of the season – the straw & Etrog studded with cloves - are sensual reminders of the bounty of the harvest.
The structure evokes feelings of vulnerability, as the permeable wood walls cannot block the winds, smells and cacophony of the surrounding city may enter unimpeded. Steel reinforcing bars are lashed to wooden branches to construct a frame for the walls and roof. The flexibility of the steel in extended lengths allows the roof volume to subtly shift and rattle with the wind.
