Temporary,
Public Art Installation/Design Competition
Sukkah
City of Hartford
Every year, Charter Oak Cultural Center presents a two month long
Celebration of Jewish Arts &
Culture which, each year, looks at Judaism through the lens of visual
art, music, dance, theatre, readings and lectures and creative ritual. This
year, as part of our 7th annual Celebration, we are proud to be partnering with
Riverfront Recapture, Inc. to present Sukkah
City of Hartford.
A Sukkah (booth) is a temporary
structure constructed for use during the week-long Jewish harvest festival of
Sukkot. Its roof is made of branches (so the sky can be seen) and it is
decorated with fruits, vegetables and artwork, etc, i.e. anything that makes it
a warm and welcoming place in which to share meals during the holiday. Sukkot
is an opportunity to thank God for the bounty of the earth. (The Pilgrims based
Thanksgiving on Sukkot.) The Sukkah, therefore, serves as the locus of the
expression of gratitude, providing a literal and figurative framework for
looking at the world.
We are seeking artists, designers
and architects who are interested in submitting innovative, creative designs for
a Sukkah. From these submissions, we will choose six to be constructed at
Charter Oak Landing in Hartford (right on the
beautiful Connecticut River) this fall. The designers of
those six sukkot (plural of sukkah) will receive a $100 stipend. Prizes will be
awarded to the top three winners who will be determined by a panel of judges.
There is a $25 entry fee.
Rabbi Donna Berman, Executive Director of Charter Oak Cultural Center, said “Sukkah City of Hartford is about breathing
new life into the ancient, sacred, beautiful tradition of building a
sukkah.”
We encourage artists of any
religion, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, class or age to
participate.
Feel free to forward this
information to anyone that may be interested.
Thank you and we look forward to
receiving your proposal!
