Sukkah City NYC 2010 was a competition to re-imagine the Sukkah, a temporary
structure for the holiday of Sukkot. This structure is erected once a
year to precise parameters. Parametric design, new methods of
material practice and radical possibilities for traditional design were
all encouraged to move this tradition forward into the future whilst
retaining all the parameters that make a Sukkah kosher. The structure's had a maximum floor area of 16.5m2 in NYC's Union Square. Our goal with the project was transparancy whilst guarding against the
elements. The bond with nature is strong in the design,a contemporary analysis for the user to experience what the Jewish
people went through on their journey through the desert but giving
enough comfort and ease of erection for modern day application. The small structure allows the user to re-engage with nature's elements over the annual festival of Sukkot. The site being Union Square would have been fascinating to test out these theories.
