SUKH36: From “Scrap” to “Skrrt”
Type: Renovation
Area: 200 sq.m.
Location: Sukhumvit 36, Bangkok
Status: Construction completed (2025)
The primary objective of this project is to reanimate an abandoned house—a structure over 30 years old—and restore its purpose. Bangkok is scattered with these "architectural ruins," 20-to-30-year-old houses left neglected despite having structurally sound skeletons. We believe in the potential of these existing structures, seeking to breathe new life into them as a sustainable alternative in an era defined by mass consumption and disposable culture.
Our design methodology involved "decoding" the existing interior voids and reimagining the facade to align with contemporary lifestyles. By reorganizing the internal layout and transforming the exterior skin, we have converted a neglected carcass into a vibrant, livable home once again.
To address the inherent gloominess of a townhouse—typically flanked by neighboring buildings—we introduced a "Central Light Well". This strategic void draws natural light into the primary living zones, creating a bright, airy, and ventilated interior.
The exterior is wrapped in a modular triangular skin that plays with geometric perspective. Depending on the viewing angle, the house reveals itself in either White or Black, adding a dynamic visual character while ensuring maximum privacy and allowing for optimal natural ventilation.
• 1st Floor: An open-plan layout seamlessly connects the parking area, living room, and dining space with both Thai and Western kitchens. The standout feature is the double-height library hall, which provides a serene atmosphere and connects directly to a private backyard garden.
• 2nd Floor: The upper level is optimized for privacy, housing three fully-functional bedrooms. Each room is thoughtfully designed with a private en-suite bathroom and individual balcony, maximizing utility within a compact urban footprint.
