In 2011, Ingo Maurer and Allmann Sattler Wappner Architects have been awarded the competition prize to redesign the mezzanine level of the subway station Marienplatz, just below Munich’s central place.
In the refined concept for the mezzanine level, presented in summer 2012, the ceiling is covered with vivid red panels. The lighting elements are made with specifically designed LED modules and are placed in groups of stripes. The vivid colour of the ceiling is used to underline the relevance of Marienplatz as city center and as a major junction in public transportation. In october 2015, the construction work was completed. The inauguration on October 26, 2015.
