When South Beauty Group, one of the largest and most influential restaurant operators in China, asked Johannes Torpe Studios to re-brand, re-define and re-design the “classic” Chinese restaurant, the challenge was warmly welcomed.
Traditional components of Chinese design sparked the inspiration for Subu, which was fused together with a Scandinavian design style to create a universal aesthetic with a Chinese touch.
Johannes Torpe Studios designed every element within Subu, from the food to the tableware, the lighting to the music, the uniforms to the tables and chairs. Every minute detail was thoughtfully considered, evoking an unforgettable fine-dining experience.
Located in one of the finest malls in the new financial district of Beijing, the grandeur of the space is created through the five custom-designed arcs that stand prominently above the main dining area, and are visible throughout the whole mall. These arcs are defining elements of the restaurant’s identity that leave a lasting impression.
The development of the Cocoons within Subu was an interesting process, and one of the most exciting parts of the project. Drawing on the idea of Chinese private rooms, our intentions were to bring the private room into the 21st century and create a truly memorable luxury experience for our guests. The exteriors become mysterious, glowing capsules, while inside they transform into elegantly alluring, intimate pods with an atmosphere of utter extravagance.
