The Stumble Upon Coffee Table by Alessandro Isola takes two mainstays of the living room - the coffee table and the rug - and combines them into a piece of furniture that is both beautiful and functional. The production of Stumble Upon was no easy task and required experimentation of many different techniques and thicknesses of material, with bending the aluminium by hand eventually emerging as the best process.
Enter any home and you immediately feel the presence of its residents, whether they’re in the room or not. Often the activity of inhabitants can be reflected in small creases, folds and wrinkles of the rug which contract the normally smooth surface. Stumble Upon enhances those folds to the extreme and curves with an innovative and almost artistic flexibility.
The fold of a rug’s corner edge is thought to be the sign of true craftsmanship, revealing the finish underneath by which its quality is measured. This concept has been accentuated and the corner flick has been exaggerated to produce a dual surface. In this case the folding reveals an even more stunning exterior, a polished reflective surface whose curved form creates deformed reflections of the surrounding decor. The fold turns back on itself, running parallel with the rug and acting as a functional table area. The rug’s protruding binding serves to protect the user against accidental knocks, and it’s accented colour helps further emphasise the contrast between the two materials.
“We are delighted to see Stumble Upon become a reality,” said Alessandro. “We have been working closely with our manufacturer through the production process in order to ensure the finished product would meet the high standards I demand from my work.”
Custom manufactured in Italy, the Stumble Upon Coffee Table is made from highly polished galvanised aluminium and thick carpet of the customer’s choice, it can be produced in a variety of sizes to suit the needs of the consumer.
