Studio 804 is a design/build program at the University of Kansas School of Architecture. As a final comprehensive experience, Studio 804 provides students with critical knowledge that prepares them for their future work as young architects in a challenging profession. The vehicle used for this exhaustive experience is the design and development of an affordable building during which students explore and develop architectural solutions which promote efficiency, sustainability, and creative use of materials.
In 2007 we completed this 1500 sqft, 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home with detached 2-car garage. Beginning in the fall semester '06 we began research on particular areas of interest in building construction and by January moved into our warehouse in Lawrence, KS where we began construction. Framing, flooring, drywall, electrical, plumbing, and preliminary exterior work were completed in just a few weeks. Meanwhile, we excavated and poured the foundation on-site in Kansas City. To make the move, we dissembled the home into 7 modules and loaded them on the back of flatbed trucks to be hoisted into place on the cured foundation. Once onsite, installation of windows, doors, cabinetry, siding, and the construction of the garage finalized the process.
