This modern freestanding studio was created by replacing a
decaying 1960s structure with a space that allowed the client to co-exist with
nature. Set in a wooded area, the studio is partially visible from the
main residence and is nestled between two rock outcroppings – one used
as a backdrop and the other as a bookend to the deck. Although the space
is small, the windows that wrap the western facade frame the scenery
and launch the inhabitant out into a void beyond that is considerably
larger. Dark Ipe siding and decking, as well as the walnut interiors,
were chosen to relate the structure to its natural surroundings. The
concept of this project is simple geometric design combined with precise
details to support its natural charm.
