The building renovated is a laboratory / workshop from the end of the 19th century, built by the Tosi family as the headquarters of the "Tosi Carlo e Figli" factory of weaning plants and agricultural machinery.
These machines had their moment of glory in the 1930s and 1950s, when the shed housed up to 40 workers. During the Second World War, German soldiers occupied the factory which was subsequently bombed. It is still possible today to recognize the signs of the reconstruction that took place in the first post-war period. The Tosi company closed in 1975, in the following years the shed housed various workshops including a mechanic and an appliance repair company.
The renovation project of the old workshop is based on the enhancement of the original architectural aspects, making them the main furnishing elements. The will is to respect the laboratory / workshop quality inherent in the building, hence the choice to bring the materiality of the architectural elements back into view: the masonry, the wooden trusses and the floor left rough. In line with this intention, the systems and structural stiffening interventions are left exposed, the windows and doors respect the original ones and the wooden furnishings reflect the materiality of the work tools found here. The existence of an old recess, probably used to repair cars during the presence of the mechanical workshop, gave rise to the placement of a large internal plan.
Through the intervention we wanted to regain an open space, in line with both the first function of the factory and the new studio. The large skylights contribute to making the environment comfortable, welcoming and functional on a technical level.
In terms of improving energy efficiency, an external thermal coat has been provided along the perimeter walls and internal thermo-acoustic insulation at the level of the secondary structure of the roof; the presence of the controlled mechanical ventilation system and the greenery guarantees a high quality and wholesomeness of the internal air, and in general a considerable environmental comfort.
