This new interdisciplinary design studio celebrates old and new, raw and refined. Recognizing the potential of an 80-year-old electrical supply warehouse in Portland’s central eastside, we celebrated the structure’s existing framework by exposing its old-growth columns and fir trusses as defining design elements. Along with creating a healthy, functional workspace, we envisioned an open, kinetic environment reinforcing a studio culture of experimentation and craftsmanship.
ADAPTIVE REUSE. To preserve the building’s inherent warehouse character, we made purposeful modifications to nurture a healthy workspace imbued with balanced daylight and connections to nature. Original high clerestory windows were enlarged to create new picture windows with operable vents. Existing roof monitors were carefully tuned to optimize daylight. And to create a highly desired outdoor space, we transformed a previously enclosed portion of the building into a large, partially sheltered back porch offering views of downtown.
SPACE OF CHOICE. Doubling as a grand lobby, the flexible Design Lab features movable furniture to accommodate varied events. An inserted “perforated box” structure housing varied functional spaces and huddle rooms partitions the Design Lab from the main open workspace. We leveraged the perimeter of this box as an adaptable display system, featuring custom-patterned plywood panels outfitted with pegs to support movable project boards for team discussions. Down the center of the open studio, custom modular casework, enhanced by display shelves and planter boxes, defines diverse collaboration areas.
MATERIALITY. An intentionally minimal material palette uses natural, regional, and economical choices. With the mission to eliminate concerning chemicals, a curated collection employed all Red List Free materials including linoleum desktops, PVC-free carpeting, and PVC-free network cabling throughout. Domestically sourced, formaldehyde-free veneer core panel and marine-grade fir plywood support a sustainable approach while preserving the raw grit and authenticity of the original warehouse.
