Completed in 1959, the former student social centre at the heart of the Université de Sherbrooke campus was originally designed to house the university administration and a cafeteria. Over time, it gradually became home to student life services, the general management, health, psychology and counselling services, as well as financial aid and student associations, without any major rethinking of the spaces. By the late 2010s, the building had become outdated and poorly adapted to contemporary student needs.
The renovation of Pavilion E1 transforms this modest three-storey, 3,000-square-metre building into a clear centre of student life. The project reorganizes the interior around a new “chill space” at the main entrance: an open, informal hall for meeting, studying, relaxing, playing games or watching the student radio broadcasts live. From this central living room, a network of flexible study areas, lounges and circulation spaces extends across the building.
Student services are consolidated and made more visible on all levels. A multifunctional room known as “Le Racoin” opens towards the inner courtyard between adjacent pavilions, hosting events, workshops and assemblies. Around it, more than fifty offices bring together the Student Life Service, financial aid, psychology and orientation services, in direct contact with the daily movements of students.
Architecturally, the project opens and lightens the existing structure rather than replacing it. New openings in the façades bring more natural light into deep floor plates, the basement is lowered to create a fully usable public level, and the envelope is upgraded for insulation and airtightness. Within this modernized shell, a simple palette and robust finishes support an everyday, lived-in atmosphere, affirming Pavilion E1 as a renewed but familiar heart of campus life.
