Plastic is one of the symbols of modern living. Plastic is everywhere, it is mostly bad for the environment, and it accumulates rapidly in our homes.
Plastic bags are one of the most commonly used items found in NYC. After a very short life cycle (deli - house - trash) they occupy space in dumping facilities for a very, very long time. STRENGTH IN NUMBERS uses these bags as a symbol of a changing New York City, giving them a new life, a new aesthetic and a new meaning. Plastic bags become a skin that interacts with nature - reflecting sunlight, rustling in the wind and collecting water. Ultimately they create a space that reflects their temporary role in our daily life.
Outside, a regular shape uses transparencies to create different visual layers. Inside is an articulated space for ever-changing light. The movable stage offers the opportunity for creating different set-ups according to the kind of activity performed, accentuating the dynamism of the space.
Thought to be a temporary structure, the pavilion is designed to be completely recyclable in every part, with the intent of continuing its message of re-use.
